  108. The LC has the same ROM's as the Mac IIsi - so they are 32 bit clean (which
  109. is why the infernal bus error often appears on dirty apps) So .. if you whack
  110. an acclerator like a 68030 or a 68040 in an LC you get pretty well every
  111. facility
  112. the IIsi offers - except for Nubus expansion.

  128. Thanks for the info. I'm now back to using System 6.0.7. I figured I'll only
  129. start using Sys 7 when I have the memory.  I'm surprised to hear that you can
  130. only manage to run 1 application with 4 megs of RAM on board! What's the size
  131. of your System (have a look under 'About this Mac' in the Apple menu). Cause
  132. when I was using it, the System size swelled to 1300+K and I still could run
  133. small applications.
  134.    As for the ROM, the LC's 32 bit clean. I think System 6.0.x doesn't make
  135. full use of it though. Only Sys 7 does. I don't really need a FPU as I'm only
  136. using my LC for things like programming, word processing etc. What do you use
  137. you machine mainly for?

  227. It has been suggested (but not confirmed) by Apple Australia that a new version
  228. of Apple's Macintosh Video Card 8.24GC is in the works at Cupertino.
  229.   
  230. The reason for the upgrade?  Simply because it does not comply with NuBus
  231. standards
  232. for power consumption rates.  Owners of Macintosh II computers are currently
  233. suggested by Apple to reserve one slot free if a Macintosh Video Card 8.24GC
  234. is installed.  For Apple Macintosh IIsi owners, you can't use one at all because
  235. of power limits.
  236.   
  237. The revised card may contain a reduced expansion limit of 4MB instead of 16MB
  238. for G-World applications, and the use of low power-consumption SRAM for its
  239. 1MB display memory accessed by the AM29000 RISC processor.  Other power-cutting
  240. design measures will be employed.
  241.   
  242. Apple have claimed in the US that they are running the risk of ruining
  243. themselves
  244. with a reputation of breaking interface standards if they do not solve this
  245. problem (Apple hard drives and video cards have been initially designed to be
  246. usable by other systems that feature these interfaces as well as on Macintosh
  247. equipment).
  248.   
  249. As with other unannounced projects, this project may be released without notice,
  250. or be abandoned... only time will tell!

  268. I've got no problems with its stability, Lawson - merely with the RAM overheads
  269. it requires (I'm currently adding 8 meg to the LC), the incompatability problems
  270. with some of my older and more treasured application software, the problem with
  271. some of my Inits, and finally the problem of paying for the upgrades of the
  272. other applications which are not fully Sys 7 compatible.

  275. (To me that's a System 7 deficiency - cos I'm into code minimisation myself)

  347. The error code was 01 and it said something about 'unexpected quit' when the
  348. dialling box appears. Yup, I was using 32-bit clean option. I tried without
  349. turning on the 32-bit clean option. But it gave the same result.
  350.   
  351. Someone suggested that it was due to the lack of RAM. That might be the
  352. case.....

  372. It does look stable but when you turn 32 bit on, it doesn't run with Telefinder
  373. User.. Big draw back for us users... Any suggestions or fix Michael Bean?

  493. The scripting that I tried to use with Red Ryder 10.3 just didn't work
  494. right. It was very frustrating, since I've had great success writing
  495. script files for my DOS machine using ProComm plus. Good scripting is what 
  496. I'm looking for, along with possible mac II/color support. Thanks for your 
  497. comments...

  508. software do you use with your zoom?  I am a registered user of Z-Term and
  509. have had a "dickens" of a time getting it set right for use with the Zoom.

  511. suggestions?

  521. Mike, I have some interest in reviewing the “Freedom of the Press”
  522. software package that was listed in the recent AMUG newsletter.  I have an 
  523. HP deskwriter printer that I would like to print Postscript Cad drawings
  524. and other such files. Is the version that is current available for
  525. reviewing capable of printing “encapsulated postscript” files?  And is
  526. this the ‘light’ version, or the full blown version? ....  If I decided to 
  527. review this software, am I obligated to purchase it??

  538.      AMUG is giving a class next saturday, July 13, from 9:00 t0 12:00
  539. PM, at the Pyle Recreation Center, on Southern Ave. near Rural Road in
  540. Tempe.  The Center is on the South side of Southern, and is the second
  541. building West of Rural.

  543.      The class will be an overview of HyperCard with an introduction
  544. to HyperCard scripting.  You can bring a Mac (and extension cord) if
  545. you like for hands-on experience, or you can just look oversomeone's
  546. shoulder.  There will be a further course August 10 on HyperCard which
  547. will get deeper into scripting.

  549.      The Class is free to AMUG members.  Non members may join at the
  550. class.  The dues are $30.00 per year and include a monthly magazine
  551. and access to nearly 200 disks of shareware and freeware and many more
  552. advantages.

  573. Confused about TrueType fonts
  574. I'm a bit confused with the new TrueType fonts, and how they work. I tried
  575. opening my system suitcase, and a window appeared containing several
  576. TrueType and fixed-sized fonts that were loaded off my System 7 disks.
  577. Now, from what I understand, a TrueType font has the advantage of being
  578. scalable and can be used for both displaying and printing. So, why does my 
  579. system suitcase contain a Courier file (scalable), and also Courier 9, 10, 
  580. 12, ... files (fixed-sized)?? I was expecting to see only 1 TrueType,
  581. scalable font file. 
  582. Also, these scalable fonts don't seem to work as I thought they would on my
  583. HP DeskWriter. When I try to print using Chicago for example, my
  584. DeskWriter driver has to create a bitmap image of the font. Can someone
  585. explain what's up with these fixed-sized font files, and why my DeskWriter
  586. doesn't seem to take advantage of the scalable fonts?? Thanks ...

  596. A good thought.  I have run "Heap Fixer" on my IIcx but not the IIsi.  I
  597. will try it and see if this offers a remedy.  I am anxious to install 7,
  598. but will mourn the loss of several pieces of commercial wear I have
  599. purchased.  Many companies are offering upgrades, recently, but I may need 
  600. a home equity loan to afford all of the required new versions.  So I wait
  601. patiently.

  678. I am working for a major danish Apple Center, and I got a copy of
  679. system 7.0 some months ago. On may 7th I was to a presentation of
  680. system 7.0 where I got the package, including a Localizer 3.8 disc
  681. for adding danish sorting and other international resources.
  682.   
  683. The problem came when I installed it on a machine at the Apple Center,
  684. then I had to upgrade all the other machines to the system 7.0 printer
  685. drivers as well. I had some problems in doing that, but the exact way
  686. is the following:
  687.   
  688. HOW TO INSTALL 7.0 PRINTRERS IN SYSTEM 6.0x
  689. 1. Do not use the Installer (not on non-US systems at least)
  690. 2. Find the program in your system folder called Printmonitor

  713. I had some trouble with this at first, but I had foolishly just copies
  714. files from a System 7 Mac. When I actually went to a set of System
  715. 7 disks and got the LaserWriter driver, the System 7 PrintMonitor,
  716. and the System-7-but-use-only-with-System-6 Backgrounder, background
  717. printing started working again. I believe you can just do an install
  718. from an installer script on the Printing disk to get System 7 printing
  719. software installed on your System 6 Mac, which would take all the
  720. fun out of figuring out which files were necessary... :-)

  1111. 32 bit Quickdraw is already in the IIsi's ROM's ... so there's no point in 
  1112. installing the init on a IIsi. The bus error's I was getting seemed to be
  1113. related to calls made by older applications seeking 24 bit addressing on
  1114. the LC. (Presumably they'd make the same calls on the IIsi) The problem
  1115. seems to have abated since I installed MMInit, but there have been a hell
  1116. of a lot of dire warnings from Apple and others regarding the use of that
  1117. init. 
  1118.    
  1119. Me? I haven't noticed any problems since installation, the number of bus
  1120. errors is now zero, and the LC is a hell of a lot faster at setting up its 
  1121. heap and in doing certain graphics applications (where there is a
  1122. necessity to use multiple heaps) If you're using System 7 there's no
  1123. reason in the world to install MMInit, cos the memory manager fix was
  1124. written into it, and you also have the ability to switch 32 bit addressing 
  1125. on and off. (A handy fix for the problem!) If you're using System 6, my
  1126. recommendation is to install it.
  1127.   
  1128. I'll probably generate yet another discussion of the various demerits of
  1129. the MMInit with this ... but until I see any of the supposed bad news
  1130. symptoms, and until I upgrade to System 7 - I'll keep using it.

  1347. gets a disk with there membership by charging about $10 extra and then

  1349. send them vback in time we would keep all the news letters stack and

  1391. an inefficient section of the operating system.  up to 40% faster for 
  1392. opening windows was suggested.  MMINIT is the name.

  1606. I took a look and it appears that Fastrack is a two part file.  You will need
  1607. to download the second part, Then try to unstuff it.  It's been awhile since
  1608. I've unstuffed a two-part file, but as I recall you start unstuffing part 2
  1609. first.

  1852. Yes, it's available on the AMUG CD - under Utilities from memory. You can
  1853. therefore
  1854. get a copy from either the MacHouse or the MacContent BBS quite easily.

  1856. Yes it will assist the IIci, IIfx, IIsi and the LC in Memory management -
  1857. basically
  1858. it speeds up heap set up and screen perfomance on applications which use large
  1859. numbers of heaps and buffers.

  1861. Apple said they were gonna fix the Memory manager in System 7 - but from all
  1862. reports they didn't. I use MMInit with System 6.07, and its hepled heaps in
  1863. reducing those infernal bus errors and increasing applications and system speed.

  2162. I just purchased a Practical Peripherals 9600 baud modem to replace my
  2163. 2400 baud unit and I have some questions:
  2164.         
  2165. 1) When I got on AMUG before I could press control-c to stop all the
  2166. startup information from showing up on my screen(each piece of info at
  2167. startup requiring a control-c), a situation that I.S. Kimball was
  2168. mentioning before.  Now, with the new modem, using the same cable I cant
  2169. send the proper code to stop all the info from coming to my screen.  Any
  2170. answers???

  2172. 2) My download times at 2400 baud average 14K/minute.  At 9600 baud, whic
  2173. is in theory 4x faster I get around 38 or 39k/minute.  Any
  2174. answers...disable error compression?  I would love some answers.

  2254. Apple will be doing a satellite TV broadcast for User Groups on
  2255. September 25.  The time will be at 6:30PM.  It will feature Apple
  2256. Product Managers and Engineers.  There will be live question and
  2257. answers, and we hope (note *hope*, we don't know) that there will be a
  2258. sneak preview of new products schedule for unveilling in October.
  2259.  
  2260. AMUG has been discussing this with AzApple in terms of trying to
  2261. locate a place that has satelite TV downlinking capabilities, a big
  2262. screen, and room for perhaps a 100 people.  If anyone knows of some
  2263. place that might accomodate us pleas let me know.  Even if the
  2264. capacity is smaller than 100 let me know, since we may set up more
  2265. than one place.  Naturally we are hoping for free accomodations.  But
  2266. if there are expenses involved we will still be interested.

  2285. PM, at the Pyle Recreation Center, on Southern Ave. near Rural Road in
  2286. Tempe.  The Center is on the South side of Southern, and is the second
  2287. building West of Rural.

  2289.      The class will be an overview of Telecommunications from a
  2290. beginner's  standpoint.  We will show some screen shots of various
  2291. commercial BBSs (America Online, and GEnie).   And we will do a
  2292. simulation of using the AMUG Bulletin Board.

  2294.      The Class is free to AMUG members.  Non members may join at the
  2295. class.  The dues are $30.00 per year and include a monthly magazine
  2296. and access to nearly 200 disks of shareware and freeware and many more

  2310. to be a bit disappointing, is the slowness of the text scrolling when in
  2311. 256-color mode on my monitor.

  2387. paid $2995.00 for 2/40 withat the Apple 13" RGB.  The base retail price
  2388. for a IIsi in Phoenix is 2499.00.  Almost two years ago, soon after Apple
  2389. had that buy it and return it if you don't like it sale, SE/30 dropped.  I 
  2390. paid 2995 for SE/30 in February of 1990.  Also for an additional $500.00 I 
  2391. upgraded to a 100 meg HD, Apple Nubus card, and extended keyboard II.

  2407. The one thing that will give you 40% system performance improvement on a
  2408. Mac with built in video (if you use it) like the IIci & IIsi is setting
  2409. your colors down to 16 or less... try it if you haven't.

  2438. Time to dust off some comments by Keith Rollin of Apple Computer, Inc. who says
  2439. why MMInit should not be used::

  2441. "IMHO (the editor: that's bulletin board shorthand for "in my humble opinion"),
  2442. almost no one should need to be using MMInit. This is for several reasons which
  2443. I'll list below, but first let me answer your question. No, the fix to the
  2444. Memory
  2445. Manager is not in any newer ROMs (Apple can't just quickly slap out new ROMs
  2446. every day, you know), but a patch to the Memory Manager  IS  in System 7.0.
  2447.  As for the reasons why you shouldn't need to run MMInit:
  2448.   
  2449. 1) Almost no applications are affected by the bug. There is only one that we
  2450. know about, ProGraph. If you are not running that then it is 99.99% likely that
  2451. running the INIT will have no affect on your IIci.
  2452.   
  2453. 2) The INIT is a duplicate of the Memory Manager in the IIci ROM, with the bug
  2454. fixed. This duplicate includes other bugs in the Memory Manager that occur only
  2455. in 32-bit mode. These problems are fixed in System 7.0 (which is the only way
  2456. you can run in 32-bit mode), but if you run the INIT, you'll re-introduce those
  2457. bugs into your Mac.
  2458.   
  2459. 3) Even the problem with ProGraph is easily fixed. For reasons which are too
  2460. elaborate to go into here, unlocking the CODE resources will speed up ProGraph's
  2461. execution. As I understand it, there are still some problems with the
  2462. applications
  2463. that ProGraph creates, but it's possible that those could be fixed, too,
  2464. eliminating
  2465. the need for MMInit.
  2466.   
  2467. 4) The INIT has shown some compatibility problems with some major 3rd party
  2468. software. The symptoms of these problems include crashes into the debugger,
  2469. mouse freezes, and the inability to boot your Macintosh.
  2470.   
  2471. 5) Performance testing of the INIT gave inconclusive results as to its overall
  2472. usefulness. Though speed deviances were mostly in the standard margin for error,
  2473. there was some evidence that the INIT might actually be slowing down some
  2474. applications!
  2475.   
  2476. With the exception of ProGraph and another as yet unreleased program, I know
  2477. of no programs that have definitely shown that they run better with the INIT
  2478. than without. This includes some of the most memory intensive applications I
  2479. know, like MPW and 4th Dimension. Many people THOUGHT that the INIT sped things
  2480. up, but when those operations were put under the stopwatch, it was found that
  2481. those reports were invalid.
  2482.   
  2483. People have also reported that their machines have stopped crashing, or don't
  2484. crash as often, after they install the INIT. Well, that may be true, but not
  2485. because of anything the INIT does. The INIT does not fix or address any crashing
  2486. bugs in the Memory Manager and, as far as I know, there aren't any such bugs."

  2583. system which should make things speedy enough for most purposes.

  2668. Some character widths in TrueType fonts are a little different from the old
  2669. bitmap sizes.  This could cause some problems if printing an old document when
  2670. the bitmap size doesn't exist anymore.  So, according to Apple, a few bitmaps
  2671. are installed automatically.  You can get rid of them if you like.
  2672.   
  2673. I can't answer your Deskwriter question except that I do have a reference sying
  2674. that DeskWriter driver version 2.1 is compatible with System 7.  Whether that
  2675. means it should use TrueType I don't know.

  2696. Yeah - NEXT really doesn't amount to a hill of beans in the current combat 
  2697. between mass produced machines. Apple produces 50 Macs for each NEXT which 
  2698. hits the market. I can't see that Gates and Microsoft would grain much by
  2699. supporting NEXT on the current sales stats - and would be surprised if the 
  2700. market saw it as a great move as well. From Microsoft's point of view it
  2701. would be a hell of a lot of work for little return.
  2702.    
  2703. If it was to cause any price fluctuations it would affect NEXT - cos
  2704. support from Microsoft could cause their share price to increase quite
  2705. dramatically. If I were Gates, I'd make part of any agreement the issue of 
  2706. either options or NEXT shares to myself - that way I'd cut a nice profit
  2707. merely on the announcement.

  2745.   The Maestro FAXModem, with associated QuickLInkII FAX software, is a very
  2746. useful product, but with some limitations at present.As a 2400 baud modem,
  2747. Maestro's
  2748. product works admirably. However, it seems impossible to send a FAX to certain
  2749. particular models of FAX machines - in particular to a Sharp FO-330  -  because
  2750. timing and handshaking seem not to be sufficiently standardized between FAX
  2751. machines !  Maestro were beta testing a new ROM, but it proved unsuitable for
  2752. Macs.  A further ROM is awaited.
  2753.   I would be interested in comments from other users of this equipment.

  2785. I am wondering if there's anyone facing the same problem as me, trying to send
  2786. shareware fees to the US. The 'normal' route (going through banks etc.) usually
  2787. ends up costing more than the actual amount asked by the authors. Anyone has
  2788. any ideas? Paul Chow suggested subscribing a Site-License. I'm not exactly sure
  2789. what that is...

  2807. Yeah I agree. My last subscription cost me about 75% more than the shareware
  2808. price. There's a number of fixes which can be useful :
  2809.   
  2810. 1. User groups such as AUSOM in Melbourne acting as clearing house (for a small
  2811. percentage or fee)
  2812.   
  2813. 2. Shareware authors taking onboard credit card payments - preferably by
  2814. Mastercard
  2815. or VISA.
  2816.   
  2817. 3. Site licenses. Not an option I'm real big on - because it doesn't do away
  2818. with the organisation/payment problem.
  2819.   
  2820. 4. Central software banks in the countries of origin of the shareware - which
  2821. have credit card facilities. (Would have to be established by the authors
  2822. themselves.)

  2895. Hi.     Here are some problems that I encountered using the maestro.
  2896.         
  2897. 1. Sent faxes to any fax number in the fax phone number list.
  2898.       
  2899. CURE  I used hayes commands to save the number I wanted into ram In the
  2900. Maestro.
  2901.     
  2902. 2. Picks up the phone regardless of whether modem set up was for auto
  2903. detect or fax only.
  2904.    
  2905. Partial CURE set the number of rings to answer on in the modem setup box
  2906.   
  2907. 3. Cannot read Receive or Send fax logs, gives a File Not Found, File/Open 
  2908. error box
  2909.   
  2910. NO CURE
  2911.   
  2912. 4. Fax Manager Init wont let go of the port if you want to use the modem
  2913. as a data modem after sending a fax.
  2914.   
  2915. CURE Unnecessary system restart
  2916.     
  2917. 5. Doesn't auto detect all incoming faxes (tells you to its a voice call
  2918. please pick up the phone) 
  2919.    
  2920. No CURE
  2921.   
  2922. 6. Some check boxes don't work strait away (especially in the send fax
  2923. setup)
  2924.    
  2925. CURE restart the application 
  2926.   
  2927. Hints And Tips
  2928.   
  2929. Use a small macpaint picture for the cover sheet graphic, convert this to
  2930. .fax with The Full Page unchecked in the send fax setup.
  2931. Make sure the resolution is the same as the fax documents you want to send 
  2932. are. The way I get around this is to have two fax cover graphics stored
  2933. one hi res the other low.
  2934.   
  2935. Make sure the Include Cover Sheet is checked in the Send Fax Setup and in
  2936. the Send Dialog Box .
  2937.    
  2938.    
  2939. I have tested these problems extensively including with a "clean striped"
  2940. system 6.05 on my SE/30.
  2941.   
  2942. I have rung Maestro and no one Knows much about the Mac there. 
  2943. I will be returning my modem soon if I don't get any satisfaction from

  2986. Could be a number of things, Mate - including :
  2987.   
  2988. 1. Worst case scenario - a virus. Check the HD using Disinfectant or some other
  2989. anti-viral utility
  2990.   
  2991. 2. Temp files - Word and some other programs are notorious for not deleting
  2992. temp files, and they create new ones every time you boot.
  2993.   
  2994. 3. New System installing. System 7 uses more formatting space than System 6
  2995. - so if you've installed System 7 then it may be using more HD space simply
  2996. to insert the formatting.
  2997.   
  2998. 4 Supplementary DeskTops. Some programs like Nortons, SUM and DiskExpress
  2999. establish
  3000. back-up desktops in case you blow the original away, and (in Disk Express's
  3001. case) to monitor file usage. After a while these DeskTops can get pretty huge.
  3002.   
  3003. 5. The DeskTop itself. Its recommended that you regularly clean this file out
  3004. - particularly if your regularly copying files to and from your hard disk and
  3005. doing a lot of deleting or changing of data. To clean it up simply hold down
  3006. the Option and Apple keys when your start the Mac.
  3007.   
  3008. Let me know if any of these either explain the problem, and/or fix it      
  3009.

  3142. Our local cable company claim they cannot downlink and broadcast.  Difficult
  3143. to understand why.  They did say if we made a tape they could broadcast
  3144. it.....Maybe.
  3145.  The "maybe" is my assumption based on a comment by their representative that
  3146. they could do it if the program was about computers in general, and not about
  3147. one over the others.  Might be a hard sell their.  I might check whatever local
  3148. stations there are that might broadcast it on local TV.

  3359. an Fkey to quickly switch you to 16 color mode.  By the way, have you
  3360. changed the color of the incoming text (talk about a headache!!).  Enjoy.

  3387. able to give you some advice. Public Access implies that ANY non-commercial,
  3388. non-obscene (and even there...) tape can be shown. If they are giving you are
  3389. hard time, tell 'em that you will be complaining to whichever agency seems
  3390. appropriate...

  3448.    But I talked a cousin of mine into buying an SE instead of a clone. 
  3449. The problem I'm having is that every time he has a question, he wants to 
  3450. talk it over with me.  
  3451.    He lives in Denver, and neither of us can afford the long distance.
  3452. Does anyone know what (or if ) the local user group would be in that area
  3453. and what their number would be?  Any assistance would be deeply
  3454. appreciated.
